Year Round Meals Programs

The YMCA is looking for volunteers to help with the After School Super Snacks Program! This program provides free, nutritious meals/snacks to children up to age 18. Each meal consists of five components: milk, protein, vegetable, fruit, and grain. The meals are given out completely free of charge and are distributed in the afternoons at Door County YMCA locations! When: Food preparation and snack bagging is done Monday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Volunteers are also needed to help serve snacks to children Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Sturgeon Bay YMCA. Where: YMCA Sturgeon Bay Program Center - 1900 Michigan St. Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 What: Volunteers will assist in preparing the meals/snacks. Snacks consist of a meat/protein, milk, vegetable, fruit, and grain item (5 food groups). Tasks may include washing, cutting, and/or bagging vegetables and fruits, making sandwiches, and bagging and packing the snacks. All items prepared cold - no cooking, baking, frying, etc. Afternoon volunteer shifts involve serving snacks to children as they come to the YMCA for their afternoon sports, classes, etc. Afternoon volunteers will hand the snack bags out to the children and keep record of the number of meals served. On occasion, volunteers can help by making up extra snacks as needed, if/when the supply of pre-made snacks runs out. Making extra snacks involves no food preparation - only bagging shelf-stable and pre-packaged items so that no kid gets left out! Our afternoon volunteers are critical to ensure we are serving all children while keeping accurate counts of the meals being served. This ensures our program is operating within the guidelines of the federal program under which we operate, and ensures we are able to receive federal funding for our program. A simple job, with very important meaning! Please contact Josh Oberndorfer with the Sturgeon Bay YMCA with any additional questions! joberndorfer@doorcountyymca.org 920-743-4949 ext. 114
