2024 Summer Foods Program
2024 Summer Foods Program

Door County YMCA

Volunteers needed for Summer Foods! Monday through Friday throughout the entire summer, the YMCA prepares and distributes free meals to children, people with disabilities, and seniors (at select locations) throughout Door County and even Algoma! Meal numbers can range from 500 to 1500 depending on the day and which programs are running at the time. We work with community partners such as churches, schools, city parks, YMCA camps, and more to help make sure no child goes hungry this summer when they aren't receiving a school lunch. We are very proud to partner with Boys and Girls Club in downtown Sturgeon Bay to make this program possible. Each day meal preparation and lunch bag assembly takes place at Boys and Girls Club - 55 S. 3rd Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, 54235. Multiple shifts will be offered each day, and we are flexible with the times - feel free to sign up and plan on arriving when you can make it, and you may leave when you need to. The shifts do not have to be rigid times - let us know what works for you - we can most likely work with your schedule. Volunteers will assist with preparing, assembling, and serving meals throughout Door County and Algoma with new sites being explored on an ongoing basis. Our goal is to serve as many children and those in need as possible... However - WE CAN NOT DO THIS WITHOUT THE HELP OF OUR AWESOME VOLUNTEERS! We are proud to say we have a very wonderful group of consistent volunteers who serve the community with us regularly, and they are excellent mentors for new volunteers, and great company to work alongside. You have to join us sometime to see what we mean - our volunteers are great, and they make it possible to carry out our work each day serving the community. All are welcome to join our team! Whatever your circumstance, we would love to hear from you. All you need is a desire to do amazing work, a drive to serve our community, and a small amount of your time. Please join us! Our volunteers sign up for opportunities on a shift-by-shift basis, and again, the times can be flexible. Please check out our available shifts and get in touch if you have any questions at all, or if you'd like to discuss flexible scheduling. Thank you for your time and consideration. We sincerely hope you join us at least once to see what it's all about. The fact that we have such loyal volunteers and we are doing such important work means this is one of the most impactful and meaningful ways you can spend a few hours a week (or whatever works for you, of course). Please contact Brett Cleveland with the Sturgeon Bay YMCA with any additional questions! We'll see you soon! bcleveland@doorcountyymca.org

Friends of Peterson Park
Friends of Peterson Park

Door County YMCA

The Friends of Peterson Park is an all-volunteer group dedicated to the preservation, sustainability and enhancement of the Peterson Park Gardens. The park committee will meet monthly except to plan and direct the group’s activities in cooperation with Parks staff. Interested individuals are welcome to attend these meetings as well. During the growing season, volunteers under the guidance of Park staff tend the Gardens, planting, weeding, pruning and updating the beds, shrubs and other features. They also work hard to help keep invasive plant species at bay. While some of the volunteers are Master Gardeners, anyone who enjoys the company of fellow gardeners and who is willing to perform these tasks following the Parks’ plan is welcome and encouraged to join the volunteers. Friends of Peterson Park Volunteers are needed to keep the Park looking clean and beautiful. These are just a few of the activities volunteers perform in the Park: * Weeding, mulching and beautifying plant beds, wild flower gardens, and front entrance * Removing invasive plants species * Cleaning restrooms and manage litter * Empty Trash & Dog Stations * Give Tours of Park and Garden to interested community members * Other projects as assigned by Staff / Lead Volunteers Working as a volunteer to clean up and beautifying a local park is a healthy way to sneak in some exercise, fresh air, and goodwill while also building lasting friendships.
